Altered Magic the Gathering Swamps playset

This was a commissioned alteration on a playset of 4 Swamps.  Dan, the player/collector/shop owner, wanted these to show around at NATIONALS in Kansas City.   It was a fun peice to work on.  A person can’t go wrong with Zombies!  These Swamps are one of the more detailed works that I’ve done for Dan over the years that we’ve known each other.   He owns a huge HOBBY TOWN USA store in Lincoln, NE and invites me out to one or two Magic events a year to meet the players and sign cards.   Each time he hands me a stack of cards to alter.  We’ve done cash deals or cool store mechandice swaps.   So its always fun.

More and more Warcraft

A Gnome Warlock defends the newly captured battle ground.

This is another piece for the World of Warcraft ccg.   This time we needed a Gnome.  I’ve never really understood the appeal of playing the Gnome characters but it turns out they’re fun to paint.

In Memory of Mr. Keel

Last week the author John Keel passed away.

One of his books, “The Mothman Prophecies” was the inspiration and basis for the movie with the same name.

The book was based on actual experiences people had in and around the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

Anyway, I’ve never met Mr. Keel or read any of his publications but the movie is outstanding.  So heres a fast, little homage.  This was done in church with a ball point pen on a butterfly shaped post-it note that I found under a pew.

More World of Warcraft art

An orc cultist casts blood magic!

Rummaging  around in my old Warcraft ccg file,  I found this olive skinned little belle.   I enjoy portraying the races that have different skin tones and colors.   With this piece  I was hoping to capture the orc-ette with everything, smooth, pea hued hide, good muscle tone, filed claws, gleaming white fangs, sweeping eye lashes and sky blue eyes.  What a catch!

World of Warcraft character portraits

It is more blessed to pwn than to be pwn'ed!

A few years back my son sat me down and walked me through the character creation process on his brand new game “World of Warcraft”.   He then (patiently) instructed me on how to make this new individual move through the different environments and situations.  Now years later I’ve got my own squad of different characters  with their various stories and items.   While I’m not a hard core player, I do very much enjoy spending an hour or so before bed in a world where 99% of my problems can be solved with a big, spiked warhammer.

When Upperdeck Entertainment offered me the chance to do art for their  World of Warcraft ccg it was a great opportunity to illustrate scenes from the alternate reality that I have come to know over the years.

Each assignment required accurate depictions of the character races and items.  Having an account with my own characters made it possible to go in-game and get my own reference material.  Many times I’ve had other players pose for screenshots of their toons race, armor or class gear.   On many occasions my own guild members have helped out with these photo shoots.  Once the art is published  they’ve always gotten a great deal of satisfaction knowing that their character has moved beyond the digital realm to be viewed by the thousands and thousands of players using the cards.

I’m currently working on my first non-card WoW character commission.  It can be seen in the initial phase on my previous post.   I’ll display more as the piece moves along.

Terese Nielsen / Ron Spencer collaboration # 1

The first of many!

Terese and Lars were out to visit last week.   She could see that I wasn’t doing anything productive so she parked me at my desk and told me to alter something while she fired up my old computer and set up this site for me.  This is the first altered card that we have ever collaborated on and I’m very happy with the way it turned out.  (many thanks to Terese’s refining style.)

Privately commissioned MtG card alterations

In the past I’ve done numerous card alterations using Magic the Gathering cards.  These are always interesting and fun.  Some show up as auctions on Ebay,  others are requests from players that want specific ideas and themes on a card.

These cards have unlimited possibilities and each is a unique, one of a kind item.

To commission an Alteration:

-Contact me at   ber5erker@hamilton.net  with your idea.

-I will respond within a day or two and verify that I’ve recieved your email.

-Once we’ve established communication and settled on an idea I’ll produce a

  quick sketch of what the changes will look like.

-At this point the commission fee is paid,  (the initial alteration fee is 

  $575.00).   Paypal is prefered but Money Orders are accepted.

-The commissioner will need to provide the card(s) that will be altered as I do not stock a supply of cards. 

-Once I’ve recieved the payment and card(s) the alteration will be completed and shipped within 2-5 weeks.    (please note that the shipping charges are not included in the initial commission fee but will be calculated and added on at payment time.
